SAUK VILLAGE. (WBBM) ― The Department of Defense says a 19-year-old soldier from Sauk Village has died in Iraq.
Officials say Army Private First Class Shane D. Penley died Sunday at a patrol base in Iraq, from wounds while on duty at a guard post.
The military says the incident is under investigation.
Penley is being remembered by family and friends.
"He felt a patriotic duty," his father, David Penley, said. "He wanted to fight for his country. He's always talked about it. He was always into the video war games. But it's not a game over there. It's totally different. But we, we just couldn't be more proud of him."
His father says he was looking forward to marriage and wanted to be a police officer.
Penley was assigned to the Second Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment, Second Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division at Fort Campbell, Kentucky.
