CHICAGO (WBBM/CBS 2) -- A 15-year-old boy is in critical condition Wednesday after he was shot in the stomach. The shooting occured about two blocks from the scene of another violent incident in which a 12-year-old girl was gunned down.
The boy was shot late Tuesday night in the 8800 block of South Exchange in the Calumet Heights neighborhood. As CBS 2's Kristyn Hartman reports, it has been a rough number of months for young people here in the city.
If you look at the statistics from the Chicago Public Schools – 18 students have been shot and killed.
In the meantime, police are searching for the person who pulled the trigger in the most recent shooting. They were going over the crime scene, looking for anything that might help them. There are witnesses and a blue light camera nearby, which might have caught what happened.
People who live in the Calumet Heights neighborhood are worried about the violence.
"Sometimes when ain't no cops you see a bunch of gang bangers on the corners," said resident Eugene Gomez. "You don't know if another gang is gonna come from another place. You gonna get shot, too."
He says last night's shooting was only about two blocks from where a 12-year-old girl was shot recently.
Police say Adamnesha Harris was shot in the back in 8800 block of South Houston Avenue, exacty two blocks west from where the other boy as shot.
The alleged shooter, Jaki Bell, 15, was not targeting Harris; she was simply caught in gang crossfire, according to police.
